9th March 1915

Tuglakabad, India

My dear Mum & Dad,

We are out here on a week or 10 days manoeuvres, so please excuse my making use of a rather rough sample of stationary, which is all I have out here, & I rather doubt being able to get a stamp, as we are 20 miles from anywhere, but in a lovely spot & a very large Canal here which connects teo rivers, it flows swiftly & is beautiful for swimming in.

We came here on Saturday & did the 20 mile march in about 6¼ hours, leaving Kingsway long before daylight, & nearly everyone got in alright.

It is fearfully hot now after about 9 a.m.

The mail boat met with an accident & so we haven’t got our letters yet, but hope to have them on Thursday.

We don’t do much in the day time now as it is too hot.

There are hundreds of tortoises here, also monkeys, peacocks, parrots. We are allowed to swim between 5 & 7 p.m., so there are hundreds in the water. We undress, walk half a mile or so up the towing path & then swim down with the stream as it is too strong to swim against.

Summer dress is now used on guard viz knickers & grey shirt with  belt & bandolier, but no tunic.

I must make up for this short & untidy epistle next week, when I expect to be back at Delhi.

Best love to you & the “Apps.”

Ever yr loving

Jack
